Ukraine’s four-time world sabre champion Olha Kharlan faced off against Russian Anna Smirnova who was competing under a neutral flag at the world championships in Milan, Italy, on Thursday.
Kharlan, 32, came out victorious, but as Smirnova stepped forward at the end of the bout, the Ukrainian instead held out her blade so they could tip them together and avoid a hand shake. Smirnova, still holding out her hand, was livid.
While it wasn’t picked up on the microphones clearly over the sound of cheers from the stands, Kharlan – holding her blue and yellow painted helmet to one side – was also seen exchanging words with her opponent after beating her 15-7 in the bout.
The Ukrainian had made clear ahead of the contest that she would refuse to shake Smirnova’s hand.
In fencing’s rules, shaking an opponent’s hand is mandatory and failure to do so results in a ‘black card’. This then led to Kharlan – a four-time Olympic medallist and world champion – being disqualified from the contest, prompting condemnation from her home country.
Smirnova was competing under a neutral flag at the tournament – but pictures of her circulating on Instagram show her posing with a man, believed to be her brother, in a Russian military outfit.
